Photo by Edyta Jaworek WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was born near Preston in Lancashire, England. Since then I have lived in York, Hull, Penrith, Palmerston North (New Zealand), Cambridge, Brisbane (Australia), Nottingham and Duino (Italy) and I think I have a little bit of all these places in me!

WHEN AND WHERE DO YOU WRITE?

Anytime and everywhere! The trick is to catch a new idea before I forget it. I try to always keep a notebook handy, or I write up my arm if there's no paper about.

WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR THE MEMORY CAGE?

Seeing a boy holding hands with his Grandad through the bars of a school gate. I was in Romania at the time, doing some voluntary work, and seeing them gave me the idea to write a story about a boy who was very close to his Grandfather.

HOW EASY IS IT TO WRITE A BOOK?

The hard bit is the editing - having to write bits again to make them work better. I'm very lucky that I have a group of writer friends and we meet up to discuss stories. We stay up eating delicious food and scribbling comments all over each others' writing!

WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE, BESIDES WRITING?

I love to take photographs like these! One of my favourite things is to travel to new places where I take pictures of things I find beautiful or interesting, or that make me smile.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK?

It's hard to think of just one... I'll tell you about some story moments I can't forget. When the clock strikes thirteen in Tom's Midnight Garden; Sam's last dream in Ways to Live Forever; Zac going into the slave dungeon in The Door of No Return...

DO YOU HAVE ANY WRITING TIPS?

Yes, READ, READ, READ!!! And then WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!!!
On the computer, on the back of a cereal packet... Recycle things you don't like and keep trying. Read your work to other people to check it sounds right and for useful suggestions.

As a last thing, it might sound strange, but try to think of the ENDING for your story first!
